944 Powerplant
The 944 engine first originated in 1982 when the engineers
took a 928 V8 series motor and cut it down the middle. What they were left with,
and further developed was an inline eight-valve four cylinder engine with a
2.5 liter displacement governed by a DME (Digital Motor Electronics) relay that
automatically controlled the fuel supply and valve operation during different
driving conditions. Even though the 944 motor was half of the 928s, parts were
not interchangeable. To compensate for the excess engine vibration inherent
in large 4 cylinder engines, the engineers incorporated counter rotating balance
shafts. These shafts rotated in the opposite direction of the cam, and were
successful in eliminating engine vibration. (Think of when your washing machine
is in the spin cycle and it clangs around because all the wash has shifted to
one side causing the weight inside to be uneven.)
911 Carrera 2 Powerplant
The 1991 911 Carrera 2 is powered by a 3.6 litre 250 hp powerplant brimming with exciting new technology: New heads, domed forged pistons, Twin spark plug ignition, higher compression with 2 knock sensors, resonant induction system, new-generation DME (Digital Motor Electronics) engine management controls..so advanced, it even updates itselfceramic exhaust port liners, lighter forged crankshaftlighter intake manifolds made from fiber glass reinforced plastic..(I know because I had a cracked intake manifold which I had replaced with 6 new ones). The engine is newer than say, a 1988 Carrera engine because it was a 3.2 litre specification in 1988 which was an evolution from the 2.0, 2.4, 2.7 and 3.0 (SC)litre models. Notice the turbine fan in the center...the engine is air cooled and uses no radiator.
All the techno babble mentioned above basically means 250 hp, 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and a wonderful engine roar resonating behind you as your heart sinks into the back of your ribcage when the throttle pressed to the floor
